Your expert pharmacist's advice - How to treat stomach ache

Treating stomach ache starts with treating the cause. However, if there are no warning signs that the pain needs to be treated very quickly or urgently, then the first treatment is to try to relax and breathe calmly, with abdominal breathing, avoiding food if it causes pain and/or vomiting, and drinking plenty of water.

If the cause of the pain has already been identified by a doctor, and a check-up has already been carried out, you can apply the doctor's practical advice and take self-medication if necessary:

  • Paracetamol-type analgesics can be used, provided the number of doses per day is respected, and aspirin or anti-inflammatories are avoided at all costs.
  • Antispasmodics (more effective than analgesics) can also be used to ease intestinal contractions.
  • In the case of colic and irritable bowel, thickeners or absorbent topicals that act as intestinal dressings should be used. These topicals act by absorbing water in the colon like a sponge, thus increasing stool consistency and binding toxins, gases and fermentation substances, making them ideal for use in cases of bloating. These topicals include molecules such as vegetable charcoal, simethicone and earth powders (diosmectite).
  • Finally, in the case of irritable bowel syndrome, symptomatic laxative or transit-slowing treatments may be combined.

For further advice, ask your pharmacist.
