What is Pranarom Ceylon Citronella essential oil used for?

Pranarom Ceylon Citronella is a large herb growing in the hot, humid regions of Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Its leaves and stems are narrow and long (1.50 m high) and are steam-distilled to extract the essential oil. Citronella EO is anti-inflammatory and insecticidal. It is mainly used to protect against or treat mosquito bites.

Ceylon Citronella essential oil has antiseptic properties on the skin to treat skin conditions such as acne and boils. It is also anti-mycotic, helping to treat panariasis and other skin mycoses. Its distinctive scent is an excellent way to prevent insect bites, especially from mosquitoes. Ceylon Citronella essential oil helps you get rid of mycoses, skin ailments and repels insects.

Ceylon Citronella essential oil has powerful antimicrobial properties, thanks to active compounds such as geranial, neral, geraniol, citronellol and citronellal. It is effective against bacteria, viruses and fungi responsible for skin, respiratory and urogenital infections. It can be used to treat candidiasis, herpes, respiratory infections and other microbial conditions.

The presence of citronellal in Ceylon lemongrass essential oil confers anti-inflammatory properties, reducing inflammatory mediators and inhibiting PGE2 prostaglandins. This anti-inflammatory action helps relieve joint and muscle pain, as well as skin inflammation. It can be useful in the treatment of rheumatic disorders and prolonged inflammatory conditions.

The citronellal present in Ceylon citronella essential oil has demonstrated an opiate analgesic action, offering effective pain relief. This analgesic property makes it an ideal choice for alleviating muscle aches, headaches and other types of chronic or acute pain.

Ceylon Citronella is renowned for its repellent effect against insects, in particular mosquitoes, mites, lice and wasps. The geraniol, citronellol and citronellal present in the essential oil act as effective repellents and natural insecticides. How to use this essential oil

Insect bites - preventive: diffuse a blend of Citronella and Geranium essential oils.

Insect bites - treatment: apply a few drops directly to the skin, with Lavender essential oil.

Rheumatism, muscular pain: massage with essential oil of Wintergreen, Lemon Grass and Rosemary diluted in Macadamia vegetable oil.

Psychological fatigue (children > 7 years)
1 drop of Ceylon citronella essential oil + 1 drop of Marjoram essential oil + 1 drop of Ravintsara essential oil, 2 drops of this mixture on a neutral tablet 2 times a day, 5 days a week, 3 weeks a month.

Prevention of mosquito bites (children > 6 years)
1 drop of Ceylon citronella essential oil + 1 drop of fragrant geranium essential oil + 2 drops of Jojoba vegetable oil, applied to exposed parts of the body several times a day.

Oral route (angina): 2 drops of essential oil on a neutral tablet 3 times a day for adults. For children over 7: 1 drop of essential oil 3 times a day.

Cutaneous use: dilute in a vegetable oil.

Adults: 2 to 5 drops of essential oil to be applied 3 times a day to the area to be treated or protected.

Children over 7: apply 2 drops of essential oil 3 times a day.

What are the precautions for use?

  • Ceylon citronella essential oil is potentially allergenic, as it increases histamine release.
  • Not recommended for pregnant women under 3 months of age.
  • Contraindicated in children under 8 years of age
  • Enzyme inhibitor, risk of drug interactions(geraniol) - Ask your pharmacist for advice.
  • Not for pure use (skin revulsive) - Dilution required
  • Caution in case of renal insufficiency per os as nephrotoxic
  • Avoid in combination with cortisone, risk of drug interaction
  • Do not use for prolonged periods, as this may cause the pituitary-adrenal axis to rest, resulting in acute adrenal insufficiency when the essential oil is discontinued.
  • Avoid applying essential oil in the evening (or before any period of rest).
  • Not recommended forosteoporosis sufferers, due to the inherent risk of decalcification.
