Malnutrition in a pregnant broodmare will never be compensated for after foaling. Worse still, it is often the cause of abortions, premature births or stunted foals... poor nutrition can also lead to fertility problems, which are probably underestimated at present, as they are masked by symptoms that are difficult to detect: discreet, late heat, ovulatory difficulties. The brood mare must be given a quality diet from the very first months of gestation.
A mare's gestation period lasts around 11 months. In general, foaling takes place between January and May for racing mares and between March and July for sport, leisure and draft mares. Spring foaling allows us to make the most of the abundant, rich grass resources, sufficient to meet the needs of the lactating mare.
At 8 months gestation, the foetus weighs just 8 kg. It really begins to grow, reaching 50 kg at birth. It therefore gains more than 40 kg in the last 3 months. The fodder available in this winter season has a low nutritional content (hay) or is available in small quantities (winter grass), providing too little of the proteins, vitamins and trace elements essential to the fetus's development.
