Our expert opinion
Osteoarthritis is a common joint disease in dogs, cats and horses, characterized by wear and tear on the joints, which can cause problems with movement and pain. It is triggered by a specific cause in the joint, and is then maintained and worsened by wear and tear. The signs of osteoarthritis are slightly different in dogs and cats.
In dogs, several stages can be described, depending on how far the disease has progressed. At the very beginning, the dog progressively refuses to run or jump, is reluctant to move and sometimes limps. After a period of rest ("cold"), its gait will be stiff when it rises from a lying or sitting position. The animal experiences chronic pain and discomfort. Then the pain becomes more present and intense, and the dog may whimper when it moves, is jostled or has its joints pressed.
Cats rarely express their pain, so the first signs of this disease are often behavioral changes. Expressions of osteoarthritis, which are easily observed in dogs, are rarely seen in cats. More often than not, the cat hardly moves at all because it's in pain, grooms itself less, and its coat is prickly. They are more irritable, may become messy if they have difficulty getting into the litter tray, and may develop anxiety disorders. Lameness is rarely a warning sign, but if you notice that your cat has difficulty jumping, climbing furniture or stairs... talk to your vet.
