Expert advice from your pharmacist

Functional colopathy (or irritable bowel syndrome) is a chronic disease of the intestines that causes bloating and abdominal pain, among other symptoms. Colopathy is chronic when symptoms last longer than 6 months. Colopathy is a common disorder affecting the large intestine (colon). Colopathy often causes cramping, abdominal pain, gas bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Despite these uncomfortable signs and symptoms, colopathy does not cause permanent damage to the colon.

Most people with colopathy find that symptoms improve as they learn to control their condition. Only a small number of people with colopathy see their signs and symptoms disappear. Fortunately, unlike more serious intestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, colopathy does not cause inflammation or changes in intestinal tissue, nor does it increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

In many cases, colopathy can be controlled by good management of diet, lifestyle and stress.

For more information, please ask your pharmacist.
