Care for stretch marks

We gain weight, we lose weight, we give birth to a baby, then two, and that's it: little white lines called stretch marks appear on our buttocks, stomachs and inner thighs. They affect between 40% and 50% of the young population. Unsightly, stretch marks are caused by excessive stretching of the skin, such as repeated dieting. Similar to"scars", they are difficult to remove, but there are appropriate solutions and preventive measures.
There are now skin care products that can prevent their appearance and significantly reduce their appearance. So if, like most women, you're worried about getting stretch marks, or if they've already taken hold on your body, discover all the major brands of anti-stretch mark skincare: oils, gels and creams that repair stretch marks, in our online organic pharmacy.

Stretch marks or striae, also known as striae distensae in scientific parlance, are small, soft scar-like fissures formed on the skin. They appear when the skin is subjected to exaggerated distension, due to atrophy of its elastic network. They may diminish over time, but will never completely disappear. Stretch marks are often caused by the skin being stretched too far, too fast and too abruptly. Pregnancy, weight gain, pubertal growth spurts, weight training or hormone replacement therapy are all cases in which stretch marks can appear. Stretch marks that appear on the stomach or any other part of the body during pregnancy are known as striae gravidarum.

Stretch marks are lesions of the skin's elastic fibers, subjected to excessive tension. They appear for a variety of reasons (rapid weight gain, puberty, yo-yo dieting, pregnancy...).
Depending on when they appear, they take on different hues: initially lilac-colored (when the skin fibers break), they turn white as they age (after several months), then fade, leaving just a small depression on the skin, outlined by a white line.

Good stretch mark care

  • In the shower, use pH-neutral cleansers that don't strip the skin. It's even better to use a soap-free bar, or a cleansing oil to soften the hardness of hard water.
  • Moisturize your skin with specific care products.
  • Take the time to apply your skin care product as soon as you get out of the shower, when the skin is still slightly damp. Its protective film against external elements is less resistant, and the active ingredients in your balm will penetrate more easily and be all the more effective. Massage into the skin, paying particular attention to the striated areas.

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are skin lesions that appear when the skin is subjected to significant tension. These superficial internal scars form mainly in the dermis, the intermediate layer of the skin. Triggering factors are varied, but they all have in common a rapid, abrupt stretching of the skin.

Common causes:

  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy-related stretch marks (striae gravidarum) usually appear on the stomach, hips and breasts.
  • Rapid weight gain or loss: Yo-yo dieting or heavy weight gain favour their appearance.
  • Puberty: Growth spurts during adolescence often result in stretch marks on the thighs, hips and back.
  • Intensive weight training: Rapidly increasing muscle mass can stretch the skin beyond its capacity.
  • Hormonal treatments: Some treatments can weaken the skin's elastic fibers.

Evolution of stretch marks :

  • Inflammatory phase: Stretch marks are red, pink or purplish, indicating recent rupture of collagen and elastin fibers.
  • Scarring phase: Over time, they become white and more discreet, but remain visible as linear depressions.

Preventing and reducing stretch marks

Although stretch marks cannot be completely erased, an appropriate skin care routine can reduce their appearance and prevent their formation. Here are the essential steps to take:

Gentle skin cleansing

Opt for pH-neutral, non-aggressive cleansers. Conventional soaps can dry out the skin and aggravate lesions. Prefer :

  • Cleansing oils: They preserve the skin's hydrolipidic film.
  • Soap-free lotions: Gentle and non-drying, they are ideal for fragile skin.

Daily moisturizing

Moisturization is the key to maintaining skin elasticity. Apply a stretch mark-specific moisturizer immediately after showering, when skin is still slightly damp. This ensures better penetration of active ingredients.

  • Stretch mark creams: Rich in moisturizing and repairing active ingredients, they strengthen collagen and elastin fibers.
  • Plant oils: Sweet almond oil, argan oil and rosehip oil are particularly effective in nourishing and softening the skin.

Targeted massage

Massage improves blood circulation and promotes the regeneration of skin tissue. Take the time to massage stretch mark-prone areas (stomach, hips, thighs) with firm circular movements, insisting on ridged areas.
