Stretch marks, also called striae distensae in scientific parlance, are kinds of small cracks similar to soft scars formed on the skin. They appear when the skin is subjected to exaggerated distension, by atrophy of its elastic network. They can decrease over time, but can never go away completely . Stretch marks are often due to too much, too fast, and too brutal stretching of the skin. Pregnancy or significant weight gain, a growth spurt at puberty, but also bodybuilding or hormone replacement therapy are all cases where the appearance of stretch marks can occur. Stretch marks that appeared on the stomach or all parts of the body during pregnancy are called striae gravidarum .
Stretch marks are therefore lesions of the elastic fibers of the skin, subjected to too much tension. They appear for many reasons (rapid weight gain, puberty, yo-yo diets, pregnancy…).
Depending on their period of appearance, they have different shades : first lilac (when the skin fibers break), they turn white with age (after several months), then fade, and just leave a small depression on the skin, underlined by a white line.
