To block 97% of UV rays with an SPF50, you need to apply the recommended (= laboratory-tested) dose, which is 2 g per cm2 of skin, equivalent to a €2 piece of sunscreen in the palm of your hand for a forearm, for example. If we use half as much (which is highly likely), protection is halved, and our SPF50 becomes an SPF25.
Hence the importance of choosing a high SPF (i.e. high protection), because in reality we don't apply enough sunscreen in terms of quantity and frequency: if we choose a low SPF and don't apply enough.
