Mostly triggered by pollen (hay fever), allergic rhinitis can also be caused by dust mites.
Allergic rhinitis is characterized by:

  • repeated sneezing
  • runny nose ",
  • tickling in the nose
  • tears
  • and eye irritation.

Drug treatment is primarily represented by H1 antihistamines which constitute the first line treatment of allergic rhinitis and represent more than 90% of prescriptions.

Allergic rhinitis and hay fever

Hay fever (or allergic rhinitis) causes symptoms almost identical to those of the common cold of viral origin. It is very disabling at certain times of the year, or even all year round if it is a so-called perennial allergic rhinitis. Some hay fever relief medications are available without a prescription.

Rhinitis is said to be intermittent if it lasts less than 4 weeks. It is said to be persistent if it lasts more than 4 consecutive weeks.

Food allergy

Food allergy is a reaction of the immune system to the ingestion of a particular food. Certain substances contained in this food are identified as dangerous by the body and this phenomenon causes a chain reaction which can sometimes be life threatening.

In France, the number of allergy cases in children has doubled over the past five years, now reaching 6 to 8% of children under the age of twelve. A growing number of these allergies are caused by certain foods. These food allergies should not be confused with food intolerances, which are more widespread but less spectacular. Infants can be affected, for example by allergy to cow's milk protein.

When a child has an allergic ground (hay fever, asthma, eczema, etc.), it is essential to consult a doctor at the first signs of an unusual reaction following the ingestion of a food . This precautionary measure can prevent the risk of serious complications.

How to treat allergy with drugs in pharmacies?

  • Allergy treatment

The treatment of allergy is based on three pillars: the avoidance diet (removing or reducing exposure to the allergen), symptomatic drug treatment with antihistamines or corticosteroids and sometimes possible desensitization, which makes the person tolerant to the allergen.

For respiratory allergies, during the acute phase , oral antihistamine is used, in tablet form in adults and syrup in children from 2 years of age.

This antihistamine is combined with local treatments such as eye drops or nasal spray (antihistamine or local corticosteroids). If asthma develops, a short-acting bronchodilator (Ventolin) is used to open the bronchi quickly. Sometimes in some patients a disease-modifying asthma treatment is necessary.

Acute phase treatment for food allergies and allergies to hymenopteran venoms depends on the severity of the reaction

For small local reactions to insect bites it is possible to prescribe a topical corticosteroid in the form of a cream .

  • Treatment of allergic rhinitis

The hay fever that you have suffered for years is not inevitable. Whatever the type of allergic rhinitis, symptomatic drug treatment involves courses of antihistamines or corticosteroids in nasal spray, whether or not they are associated. For cough, ventolin may be prescribed.

  • Treatment of food allergy
    • The gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea can also be relieved respectively by the occasional intake of intestinal transit slows / antisecretories , or by antihistamines H1 antinausea ;
    • Corticosteroids for cutaneous application in case of atopic eczema. Whatever the age, it is essential to keep the skin well hydrated by emollient and moisturizing creams;

    • Bronchodilators, for patients who have developed asthma. They are administered by inhalation and are used to treat an attack. The doctor will also prescribe a background treatment, as appropriate.

Faced with food allergy, the main treatment is based on the avoidance of food or food containing allergenic substances.

Advice from your pharmacist

  • To reduce sneezing, runny nose, itching and watery eyes, you can take antihistamines. These relieve allergic symptoms by blocking the release of histamine.
  • To prevent allergy symptoms, it is recommended to avoid coming into contact with allergens, that is, the agents that trigger the allergic reaction.
  • Here are some tips to decrease the intensity of your symptoms:
Mites and dust Pollen from trees, grasses and herbaceous plants Exterior / interior molds Animals
Get rid of furniture or items that collect dust like upholstered chairs and rugs Keep doors and windows closed Keep doors and windows closed for two days after heavy rains Remove the animal from the house (this is the best solution)
Cover the mattresses with a plastic sheet Avoid mowing the lawn or frequenting areas where the allergen is present, such as parks and undergrowth Remove piles of dead leaves, grass clippings and other plant residues from your yard If you decide to keep the animal despite an allergy, place the litter in a low traffic area and away from the airways of the house.
Wash floors frequently Avoid drying laundry outside Avoid having plants indoors Wash the animal weekly
Reduce air humidity Wear sunglasses when outdoors Be careful not to have water leaks in the house Do not allow pets into bedrooms
Install a high performance air filter Prefer air conditioning in the house and in the car Make sure the humidity level in your home does not exceed 40 to 45% Install a high performance air filter
  • It is best to take antihistamines daily throughout the allergy period to optimize their effectiveness. If you want to use a decongestant to relieve nasal congestion, make sure the medicine you are taking does not already contain one (some formulations combine an antihistamine and a decongestant, so avoid adding another decongestant) .
  • Warning: the use of decongestants is not suitable for everyone and certain precautions are required. Always ask your pharmacist for advice before using any over-the-counter medication to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies.
