Mostly triggered by pollen (hay fever), allergic rhinitis can also be caused by house dust mites.
Allergic rhinitis is characterized by :

  • repeated sneezing,
  • runny nose
  • tickling in the nose
  • watery eyes
  • and eye irritation.

Medicinal treatment is primarily represented by H1 antihistamines, which are the first-line treatment for allergic rhinitis, accounting for over 90% of prescriptions.

Allergic rhinitis and hay fever

Hay fever (or allergic rhinitis) causes symptoms virtually identical to those of viral colds. It can be very debilitating at certain times of the year, or even all year round in the case of perennial allergic rhinitis. Certain medications designed to relieve hay fever are available without prescription.

Rhinitis is said to be intermittent if it lasts less than 4 weeks. It is said to be persistent if it lasts more than 4 consecutive weeks.

Food allergy

Food allergy is an immune system reaction to the ingestion of a particular food. Certain substances contained in the food are identified as dangerous by the body, leading to a chain reaction that can sometimes be life-threatening.

In France, the number of allergy cases among children has doubled over the last five years, reaching 6-8% of children under twelve. A growing number of these allergies are caused by certain foods. These food allergies should not be confused with food intolerances, which are more widespread but less spectacular. Infants can be affected, for example by cow's milk protein allergy.

When a child has an allergic background (hay fever, asthma, eczema, etc.), it is essential to consult a doctor at the first sign of an unusual reaction following ingestion of a food. This precautionary measure can prevent the risk of serious complications.

How to treat allergies with drugs available in pharmacies?

Treatment of general allergy symptoms

Allergy treatment is based on three pillars: avoidance (eliminating or reducing exposure to the allergen), symptomatic drug treatment with antihistamines or corticosteroids, and desensitization (sometimes possible), which makes the person tolerant to the allergen.

In the acute phase of respiratory allergies, oral antihistamines are used, in tablet form for adults and syrup form for children aged 2 and over.

This antihistamine is combined with local treatments such as eye drops or nasal sprays (antihistamines or local corticoids). If asthma develops, a short-acting bronchodilator (Ventolin) is used to open up the bronchial tubes rapidly. In some patients, background treatment of asthma may be necessary.

Acute treatment for food allergies and allergies to hymenoptera venoms depends on the severity of the reaction

For minor local reactions to insect bites, a dermocorticoid cream may be prescribed.

Treatment of allergic rhinitis

The hay fever you've been suffering from for years is not inevitable. Whatever the type of allergic rhinitis, symptomatic medical treatment involves courses ofantihistamines or nasal corticosteroid sprays, combined or not. Ventolin may be prescribed for coughs.

Food allergy treatment

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and nausea can also be alleviated by the occasional use of intestinal transit/antisecretory agents, or H1 antihistamines ;
  • Corticosteroids applied to the skinin cases of atopic eczema. Whatever your age, it's essential to keep your skin well hydrated with emollient and moisturizing creams;
  • Bronchodilators, for patients who have developed asthma. These are administered by inhalation and are used to treat an attack. The doctor will also prescribe a background treatment, depending on the case.

In the case of food allergy, the main course of treatment is the avoidance of the food or foods containing the allergenic substances.

Your pharmacist's advice

  • To reduce sneezing, runny nose, itching and watery eyes, you can take antihistamines. These relieve allergic symptoms by blocking the release of histamine.
  • To prevent allergy symptoms, we recommend avoiding contact with allergens, i.e. the agents that trigger the allergic reaction.
  • Here are a few tips to reduce the intensity of your symptoms:
Dust mites and dust Tree, grass and herb pollen Indoor/outdoor molds Pets
Get rid of furniture or items that trap dust, such as upholstered chairs and carpets. Keep doors and windows closed Keep doors and windows closed for two days after heavy rains Remove the pet from the house (this is the best solution)
Cover mattresses with plastic sheeting Avoid mowing the lawn or frequenting areas where the allergen is present, such as parks and undergrowth Remove piles of dead leaves, grass clippings and other plant residues from your property. If you decide to keep your pet despite an allergy, place the litter box in a low-traffic area away from the house's air vents
Wash floors frequently Avoid drying laundry outdoors Avoid having plants indoors Wash pets weekly
Reduce air humidity Wear sunglasses when outdoors Make sure there are no water leaks in the house Keep pets out of bedrooms
Install a high-performance air filter Use air conditioning in your home and car. Ensure that humidity levels in your home do not exceed 40-45%. Install a high-performance air filter
  • Antihistamines should be taken daily throughout the allergy period to optimize their effectiveness. If you wish to use a decongestant to relieve nasal congestion, make sure that the medication you are taking does not already contain one (some formulations combine an antihistamine and a decongestant, so avoid adding another decongestant).
  • Please note: decongestants are not suitable for everyone, and certain precautions must be taken. Always ask your pharmacist for advice before using any over-the-counter medication intended to relieve seasonal allergy symptoms.
