How can I treat allergic rhinitis with drugs from my pharmacy?

Allergic rhinitis, also known as seasonal allergy, is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose, sinuses and eyes. It is triggered by an over-reaction of the immune system to an allergen, such as pollen or dust mites. To defend the body, the immune system releases various compounds, notablyhistamine, which are responsible for allergic symptoms.

There are two types of allergic rhinitis:

  • perennial allergic rhinitis, which persists all year round;
  • seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as "hay fever" or seasonal allergy, which occurs at the same time every year.

RhinAdvil Rhume contains a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory with analgesic properties, ibuprofen, and a vasoconstrictor, pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. RhinAdvil Rhume is indicated for adolescent (15-17 years) and adult colds, for the symptomatic treatment of blocked nose accompanied by headache and/or fever.

Allergic rhinitis and hay fever

Hay fever (or allergic rhinitis) causes symptoms almost identical to those of viral colds. It can be very debilitating at certain times of the year, or even all year round in the case of perennial allergic rhinitis. Certain medications designed to relieve hay fever are available without prescription.

Most often, hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is a seasonal allergy linked to pollen production: from February to April for tree pollens, from May to July for grass pollens, and from August to October for herbaceous pollens. However, other substances can cause allergic rhinitis, such as dust mites and their waste, animal hair and certain chemicals. In this case, the allergy can occur all year round, and is known as perennial.

Different forms of rhinitis allergy

Allergies can manifest themselves in a wide variety of ways. They can affect all organs:

  • nasal form: allergic rhinitis or "hay fever" ;
  • respiratory: asthma attacks;
  • ocular: allergic conjunctivitis;
  • cutaneous form: exanthema, urticaria, atopic dermatitis;
  • angioedema: swelling of certain parts of the body, particularly the face (lips, eyelids);
  • anaphylactic shock (general malaise) requiring emergency treatment.

Which medication to choose for rhinitis?

Different types of medication are available to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. The choice of treatment depends on the intensity of symptoms. Some medications are taken orally, while others are taken nasally or in the form of eye drops.

The first step in treating allergic rhinitis is to remove the allergenic substances, whenever possible. An antihistamine is often prescribed, to be taken orally or nasally. Nasal suspension corticoids are also prescribed, but are more prone to undesirable effects: nosebleeds, irritation, weakening of the nasal mucosa in the event of prolonged treatment. Their use should be limited in duration.

  • Oral antihistamines

H1 antihistamines block the production of histamine, a substance which plays a major role in triggering allergic reactions. Antihistamines in tablet, capsule, eye drop or oral solution form are active in reducing runny nose, itchy nose and sneezing, as well as tingling of the throat and eyes.

  • Mildly sedating antihistamines

The latest H1-type antihistamines (so-called 2nd-generation antihistamines) are generally not very sedating at the recommended doses. Certain presentations containing cetirizine or loratadine are available without prescription. However, their use in self-medication is reserved for adults and children over the age of twelve. They should not be used for more than seven days without medical advice.

  • Sedative antihistamines

The oldest H1-type antihistamines (so-called first-generation antihistamines) have a sedative effect which can induce drowsiness, sometimes intense, in some people. This must be taken into account, especially when driving a car or operating dangerous machinery. They may also have atropinic side effects (dry mouth, constipation, accommodation disorders, urine blockage). Some of these antihistamines (PHENERGAN, PRIMALAN) belong to the phenothiazine chemical family: they carry a rare but serious risk of agranulocytosis (reduction in white blood cells).

  • Nasal antihistamines

Anti-allergic nasal solutions containing antihistamines can also be useful in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, but they do not act on eye disorders.

  • Nasal corticoids

Nasal corticosteroids are particularly effective in treating allergic rhinitis, thanks to their anti-inflammatory effect on nasal mucous membranes. However, they are more prone to adverse effects than other nasal treatments: nosebleeds, irritation, weakening of the nasal mucous membrane in the event of prolonged treatment. Their use must be limited in duration.

These medications are prescription-only, with the exception of HUMEX RHUME DES FOINS, which can be purchased directly from certain pharmacies. It is reserved for the treatment of allergic rhinitis in adults, and should only be used in the event of a recurrence of symptoms already diagnosed by a doctor.

A nasal solution combining an antihistamine and a corticosteroid can be proposed to people who are not sufficiently relieved by an antihistamine or corticosteroid alone.

  • Eye drops to relieve ocular symptoms of allergic rhinitis

H1 antihistamines in eye drops are also indicated for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis when associated with rhinitis. Single-dose presentations are preferred.

Your pharmacist's advice

How to deal with symptoms suggestive of hay fever depends on whether or not the condition has been diagnosed in the past. If you suspect hay fever but have never experienced it before, you should seek medical advice. Otherwise, people who regularly experience this type of problem can use over-the-counter antihistamines, as advised by their doctor.
