All horses, whatever their breed, grow at the same rate. No horse has a mature skeleton before the age of 6. There are no early or late breeds. We often talk about growth plate, but contrary to popular belief, it's not just "somewhere in the knee", it's in every bone behind the skull and in other bones like the pelvis.

Is it necessary to wait until all the growth plate has ossified before riding a young horse?

No, but the longer you wait, the less risk you take. Owners and professionals should base their decisions on a defined, easy-to-remember ossification "schedule", rather than on the horse's outward appearance.

Some breeds, such as quarters, look mature, but are not. Typically, ignorance of the ossification process is detrimental to these horses, often resulting from owners' desire to refer to their own frame of reference (for competition purposes, for example), to the detriment of the horse's well-being.

Breaking-in

If breaking-in means riding/working, then it's best not to do so before the age of four.
It's better to get him used to the equipment and various situations around the age of two, mount and dismount him around the age of three, and start getting into the saddle and teaching him steering codes around the age of four. Finally, wait until he's five to learn his future horsework, so that he's trained by the time he's six.

Ossification

The ossification process proceeds from bottom to top, i.e. the feet are the first to undergo this process, while that of the back will come much later.
In ascending order :

  • third phalanx - birth,
  • second phalanx - top and bottom - between birth and 6 months,
  • first phalanx - top and bottom - between 6 months and 1 year,
  • cannon - between 8 months and 1.5 years,
  • small knee bones - between 1.5 and 2.5 years,
  • lower radius-ulna - between 2 and 2.5 years,
  • load-bearing portion of the glenoid at the top of the radius - between 2.5 and 3 years,
  • humerus - between 3 and 3.5 years,
  • scapula - between 3.5 and 4 years,
  • hind legs - same as above,
  • hock - not before age 4,
  • tibia - between 3 and 3.5 years of age,
  • femur - between 3 and 3.5 years of age,
  • neck - between 2.5 and 3 years,
  • pelvis - between 3 and 4 years
