Lice treatment is the bane of every parent's existence, especially when these little parasites become resistant to the various anti-lice shampoos. For a treatment to be fully effective, it must be able to kill both lice and nits.
ATTENTION: treatment is compulsory: there is no such thing as a spontaneous cure! The longer you wait before applying a suitable treatment, the longer and more complicated it will be to eradicate all parasites.
There are two categories of anti-lice products:
Neurotoxics are irritating and can lead to resistance, but they work really well on nits. They usually come in the form of a spray to be applied to dry hair. Treatment should be carried out in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames, with the face well protected, especially the eyes, nose and mouth. Rinse thoroughly to avoid recontamination. Usage precautions: most of these products are contraindicated before the age of 2 or 3, and not for pregnant women. They are also contraindicated in cases of asthma or respiratory problems. Among the molecules making up these products are pyrethrum and synthetic pyrethroids. For all these reasons, but above all because of the resistance these products have generated, they are virtually no longer marketed.
Asphyxiants are insecticide-free anti-lice shampoos that act mechanically by blocking the respiratory orifices of adult lice and nits, leading to their death by asphyxiation. They are generally less aggressive for the scalp, non-toxic for the patient and non-polluting for the environment. To date, these new products have not created any resistance in lice, nor do they irritate the scalp. They can be used from the age of 6 months. The lotions are applied part by part to a dry scalp, and the application time varies from 10 minutes to 12 hours, depending on the product. Simply rinse the head with a mild shampoo, then comb the hair with a fine comb to remove dead parasites. It is advisable to repeat the application the next day or a few days later. These products generally contain silicone complexes (diméticone, cyclométicone).
