How to treat colds with drugs in the pharmacy?

In most cases, the common cold goes away on its own. No treatment can get rid of the virus faster. In fact, the main aim of treatment is to make the common cold less painful by relieving the symptoms : sore throat, headache, nasal congestion. Because the common cold is caused by a virus and not a bacteria, antibiotics have no effect .

Many brands offer cold medicines , which generally combine a pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, which also fights against fever, and an oral decongestant (pseudoephedrine), sometimes in the form of day / night tablets. These medications (Actifed®, Cold and Sinus Advil®, Cold and Flu Benylin®…) can relieve symptoms, but do not speed healing and are not recommended for children . Respect the dosage.

Colds, sore throats, coughs: buy your medicines without a prescription at a pharmacy

Find our new range of medicines to treat your colds, cough and ENT throat problems in your Ars Approved online pharmacy for the sale of medicines. Under the term ENT (otorhinolaryngological) disorders, we group together the ailments concerning the nose-throat-ears area which is the preferred target of many viruses, bacteria and other allergens.

The sale of drugs online is reserved for customers residing in metropolitan France . No medication will be delivered outside of France. Minors under the age of 16 are not allowed to personally order medication on our website.

The common cold is a very common infection of the nose (or more precisely of the nasal cavities) and throat, caused most of the time by a virus (of the rhinovirus family). Also called viral or acute rhinitis, it causes a sore throat , sneezing, a stuffy nose (nasal congestion), and runny nose which causes daytime dry cough and nighttime oily cough. The duration of symptoms is often longer than what is commonly conveyed. These clinical signs resemble those caused by Allergies .

From the onset of autumn and until the end of spring, colds are more frequent. We then spend more time indoors, which contributes to contagion . Also, during the winter, the air is generally drier in the houses, which dries up the mucous membranes of the nose . These become less effective at fighting viruses and preventing the onset of a cold. In southern countries, colds are more frequent during the rainy season.

When you catch a cold, you have to take your pain patiently. A cold lasts on average a week and resolves spontaneously in the majority of cases. Don't try to automatically prescribe antibiotics to treat your cold because it isn't always a bacterial infection. There is no standard treatment to get rid of it. However, you can quickly relieve the symptoms to better tolerate it.

How to relieve cold symptoms

By waiting for your cold to be a bad memory, which should be a matter of a few days, you can reduce the symptoms that bother you :

  • while taking paracetamol: it is an effective remedy against fever and possible pains sometimes caused by colds (be sure to respect the maximum authorized doses);
  • by moisturizing your nasal cavities with physiological serum or sea water (sprays are sold in pharmacies);
  • drinking water regularly ;
  • by not covering yourself too much if you are staying at home to rest as this could cause a fever to rise, however if you do go out, cover yourself properly;
  • by ventilating the rooms of your home once a day but still staying warm all the same;
  • elevating your head to sleep to make breathing easier

Natural cold solutions

A stuffy nose or a runny nose are arguably the most bothersome cold symptoms, especially at night! Fortunately, there are natural solutions to fight a stuffy nose and a runny nose:

  • Essential oils in olfaction , inhalation or diffusion. Pour for example a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil in a bowl of very hot water. Stand over the bowl with a towel over your head, then inhale the steam that escapes. Or put a few drops on a tissue, then breathe.
  • Sea water. Sea water sprays can effectively clean the nasal cavities in cases of Bronchitis and relieve irritation of the mucous membrane. There are seawater solutions that are isotonic (the concentration of sodium chloride is similar to that in our body) or hypertonic (the concentration of sodium chloride is higher). Hypertonic seawater is recommended when the nose is very stuffy because it promotes the flow of nasal secretions. But it should not be abused because it can irritate the nose.
  • The physiological serum makes it possible to thin the nasal secretions and to detach them from the cavities to facilitate their expulsion at the time of the blowing. These washes prevent the infection from rising to the level of the ears .
  • Homeopathy. Take 2 granules of Nux Vomica 5CH or Cinnabaris 5 CH, three times a day.
  • Plants . Herbal teas made from elder flowers accelerate the decongestion of the nose. Those made from plantain limit sneezing.

Advice from your pharmacist

  • If you have a cold, the rhinovirus is responsible, not the bacteria. Taking antibiotics is therefore not an effective drug treatment for the common cold . It could even be counterproductive: the antibiotic can wipe out entire colonies of good bacteria and weaken you further. Only a doctor can prescribe an antibiotic when necessary, especially in case of secondary bacterial infection.
  • Do not hesitate to contact your doctor again if the prescribed treatment does not sufficiently relieve the symptoms.
